Dan Ross and the Salvation Army 09, The Gulf Coast Area Band, "Festival Brass"

March - Cairo Red Shield

The Chicago Staff Band - USA

Lyrics

Hark, hark my soul what warlike songs are swelling
Through all the land and on from door to door:
How grand the truths those burning strains are telling
Of that great war til sin shall be no more
Salvation Army, Army of God
Onward to conquer the world with fire and blood.

Onward we go, the world shall hear our singing,
Come guilty souls, for Jesus bids you come
And through the dark, its echoes loudly ringing
Shall lead the wretched, lost and wandering home
Salvation Army, Army of God
Onward to conquer the world with fire and blood.

Far, far away, like thuder grandly pealing
We'll send the call for meercy full and free
And burdened souls by thousands humbly kneelin,
Shall yield, Dear Lord, their contrite hearts to thee.
Salvation Army, Army of God
Onward to conquer the world with fire and blood.

Conquerors, at last, though long the fight and dreary,
Bright days shall dawn and sin's dark night be past;
Our battles end in saving sinners weary.
And Satan's Kingdom down shall fall at last.
Salvation Army, Army of God
Onward to conquer the world with fire and blood.

This march was one of the favorits of the Texas Gulf Coast Area Timbrels. The timbrel brigade rehearsed for three hours every Saturday at the same time as the band. Their drills were very crisp and exceptionally dramatic. They never had to play accompanied by a recording. The band was always there to accompany them.

These ladies could make the tambourine an ouststaniding instrument.

She loved to play The Salvation Army tambourine with the band.

for the "Dickens on the Strand Festival." The tambourine was a favorite of our audiences.

The Salvation Army participated in the "Dickens on the Strand" Festival in Galveston, Texas, in two ways. There were crowds of 250,000 at this festival so clean up of the streets was necessary. The Salvation Army contracted with the City of Galveston to do this street cleanup using the men of The Adult Rehabilitation Center.
The other method of participation was The Salvation Army Texas Gulf Coast Area Band. We played concerts in the crowd of 250,000 and then split up into four or five smaller ensembles and played on various street corners. Our repertoire at the "Dickens on the Strand" Festival included Feestival Series, General Series and Triumph Series Christmas Selections and marches.

We played at the Dickens festival for two years and then we were told that we didn't have "period" costumes so we wither had to get some or not play again. Shirley, being from Dickens' home town, so to speak, whipped up some Timbrel uniforms that passed the test and we were allowed to play as long as a timbrel brigade in Shirley's uniforms was with the band.

The corps officers in Galveston played in the band and we supported them in anything they needed a band for. We played at the dedication of the new Corps building in Galveston. They had obtained a Safeway store and had converted part of it into a second hand store and part of it had a nice little corps built into it. The corps entrance had a gigantic Salvation Army Crest painted on the outside wall with some flagpoles. The whole entrance looked very nice. The corps sanctuary was fairly small. When the band set up inside, we had to put the Bass Drummer in the band room. The band spread from there, up the stairs to the platform, down the stairs on the other side of the platform and into the hallway opposite the band room, but we got it all there. If you are familiar with the Triumph Series march, Biloxi, it was written for the dedication of the corps building in Biloxi, Mississippi. In that instance, the band was too big to fit into the new Biloxi corps building so it couldn't play inside.

We also played at other events in Galveston including the annual dinners.
