March - Marching Onward

Chicago Staff Band

Lyrics

Onward Christian Soldiers

verse 1

Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.
Christ, the royal Master, leads against the foe;
Forward into battle see His banners go!

Refrain
Onward, Christian soldiers, marching as to war,
With the cross of Jesus going on before.

verse 2
At the sign of triumph SatanŐs host doth flee;
On then, Christian soldiers, on to victory!
Hell's foundations quiver at the shout of praise;
Brothers lift your voices, loud your anthems raise.

Refrain

verse 3
Like a mighty army moves the church of God;
Brothers, we are treading where the saints have trod.
We are not divided, all one body we,
One in hope and doctrine, one in charity.

Refrain

verse 4
What the saints established that I hold for true.
What the saints believed, that I believe too.
Long as earth endureth, men the faith will hold,
Kingdoms, nations, empires, in destruction rolled.

Refrain

verse 5
Crowns and thrones may perish, kingdoms rise and wane,
But the church of Jesus constant will remain.
Gates of hell can never gainst that church prevail;
We have Christ's own promise, and that cannot fail.

Refrain

verse 6
Onward then, ye people, join our happy throng,
Blend with ours your voices in the triumph song.
Glory, laud and honor unto Christ the King,
This through countless ages men and angels sing.

Refrain

I'll Go In the Strength Of The Lord

I'll go in the strength of the Lord
In paths He has marked for my feet;
I'll follow the light of His word,
Nor shrink from the dangers I meet.
His presence my steps shall attend,
His fullness my wants shall supply;
On Him, till my journey shall end,
My unwavering faith shall rely.

Refrain>
I'll go (I'll go,) I'll go in the strength,
I'll go in the strength of the Lord,
I'll go, (I'll go,) I'll go in the strength,
I'll go in the strength of the Lord.

I'll go in the strength of the Lord
To work He appoints me to do;
In joy which his smile doth afford
My soul shall her vigour renew.
His wisdom shall guard me from harm,
His power my sufficiency prove;
I'll trust His omnipotent arm,
And prove His unchangeable love.

Refrain
go in the strength of the Lord
To conflicts which faith will require,
His grace as my shield and reward,
My courage and zeal shall inspire.
Since he gives the word of command,
To meet and encounter the foe,
With his sword of truth in my hand,
To suffer and triumph I'll go.

Refrain

This march was an instant hit with the band. We broke a rule about how many times we would practice a piece before we played it in public. The weekend after we got this march for the first time we played it in the Houston Opera house.

Our first bench in the cornet section were all women. These were great cornet players who had all won top honors through the years at the Southern Territory's Music Institute. These women were tireless and the quality of their playing did not diminish at all over our three hour rehearsals. Our first and second cornet sections included some great players too. One was a high school band director and several were corps officers. Our Soprano cornet player was the corps officer at Houston Temple and played the Soprano Solo "The Prayer Meeting." Our flugelhorn player was from Houston Temple and worked at the Houston Area Command.

One January rehearsal I asked the band if they had seen the SA band in the Rose Bowl parade. Most of them had seen it. I asked what they thought of the march that the band played. Our Flugelhorn player said, "I think we have the music for that." I said, "What are you talking about?" She then told me there was a bunch of music at Houston Area Command that we had never played. I couldn't believe it. The next Monday, I went to the Area Command and got the music. We had been playing old stuff. I couldn't believe nobody had told me about the new music. We went through that stack of music and switched over to all new stuff except for the timbrel music. This march was in the stack of new music. Until that point the band had never played any Festival Series music. Suddenly most of what we played was Festival Series.

 Tell your Salvation Army friends about this website. Chapter Ten about our Seattle Temple Corps Experience is going to be very interesting, but you have to read every chapter in order to understand Chapter 10. You won't be disappointed.
