Our longest trip into Mexico was to Monterey. We had several outstanding experiences in Monterey. While riding the bus between Nuevo Laredo and Monterey we got into a conversation with the Mexican bus driver. We were talking to him about our itinerary in Monterey and the return trip. He told us there wasn't going to be any transportation in Monterey nor was there going to be a return trip to Nuevo Laredo. We asked him why and he told us he had to be in Tiajuana the following morning. We explained that we had leased the bus for the whole trip and he claimed that nobody had told him. I began thinking we had met another bus driver who was going to hold us up for a big payoff. Instead, he told us that he would skip the trip to Tiajuana and stay with us for as long as we needed him. He said he would call his employer and tell them he wouldn't be going to Tiajuana after all. He stayed with us the whole trip and provided excellent service with no "bribes" whatsoever. One of the most memorable moments in Monterey was the concert in a town square surrounded by tall buildings. We had an excellent PA sound system and some top notch vocalists. As we stood on the bandstand, one of our ladies sang "Via Dolorosa." The crowd was absolutely silent. There were no sounds of traffic on the nearby streets and, because of the tall buildings, we could hear the music echoing the whole time she sang. It was very ethereal and haunting. |
